제 13 호 Welcoming & Fresh Start
Kicker: EDITORIAL (START) Welcoming & Fresh Start By Sol-Hyang Park, Editor-in-chief cookie7152@naver.com In spring, with the warm weather, there are new things to do and things that you want to start. So, March seems to be the season that goes best with the word "start." March, which marks the beginning, is approaching us. For many students, March will be the month to set another goal and mindset as the new semester begins. For freshmen, March will feel like a new world is opening up. I would like to congratulate freshmen on entering Sangmyung University, despite many restrictions and difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, I am very sorry that there are still limitations in energetic college life you dreamed of. Likewise, we have been working mainly online, such as releasing webzine publications or holding an essay contest, due to COVID-19. This year, I hope to do various face-to-face activities such as quiz events with students. I look forward to the situation getting better, so 2022 will be a year where we can think of hope rather than despair. March is a month of start and excitement – As the saying goes, “Well begun is half done,” -so I hope you start a healthy, enjoyable and worthwhile university life. We are also planning to do various activities this year with a new mindset. We will release a total of four publications this year, recruit new members, and hold fresh events. Please look forward to our future activities!
제 12 호 Throwback of 2021 & Upcoming 2022
Kicker: EDITORIAL (Throwback & Upcoming) Throwback of 2021 & Upcoming 2022 By Sol-Hyang Park, Editor-in-chief cookie7152@naver.com The weather suddenly got cold, and December of 2021 has already come. How was 2021 for you? Following last year, we have also lived under the coronavirus situation. Especially freshmen, who entered this year, would not have been able to fully enjoy a normal university life, just like sophomores. But now we are gradually accepting “With Corona,” and by next year, we may be able to have a normal university life. Before welcoming the hopeful next year, I would like to reflect on some recent news. First of all, the SM Herald held the 41st Sangmyung Essay Contest last month. Originally, we conducted the contest in one classroom, but since the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been receiving essays online. The essay topics were metaverse, copyrights, and online lectures. You can also find these topics in this December issue. The award-winning essay will soon be released on the Webzine. Another news, like I mentioned, is the government's "With Corona" policy. It is being implemented in three steps. -In the recent first step, the operation restrictions of living facilities are eased, and the hours of using all facilities except entertainment facilities are lifted. Academies, movie theaters, performance halls, reading rooms, PC rooms, restaurants, cafes, etc. are available all day without time limit. Also, without a “Vaccine Pass,” using some multi-use facilities with a high risk of infection, such as indoor sport facilities and, karaoke rooms, is restricted. In the second and third stages, return to daily life before COVID-19 can be realized. However, if there is a rapid increase in the number of infection, the government will strengthen social distancing again. It can be possible, since we are getting complacent about COVID-19. Therefore, we must follow quarantine rules such as wearing a mask and washing your hands frequently to protect ourselves from the virus. I hope you finish the rest of 2021 healthy and happily. I also hope that the upcoming 2022 would be more hopeful and lively to everyone.
제 11 호 The Second Resolution
Kicker: EDITORIAL (PLANNING) The Second Resolution by Yoo-Jung Kim, Editor-In-Chief kyjmimi121@naver.com After the first semester, the second semester is coming up. With the second semester as our second resolution, we are going to work harder. We will tell you our plans for the second semester in detail. The SM Herald is preparing for two events in the second semester. The first one is SM Herald Promotion Day. In case of promotion day, this year's COVID19 situation cannot be predicted. We think we'll probably choose the replacement method as an online event. We're thinking of an event where we give presents to students who solve well a quiz about our articles. The second is an SM Herald essay contest. In the case of the essay contest, it will be held in November regardless of the COVID19 as last year. Just like the conventional method, three keywords are presented to write an essay using keywords. However, some say that one of the three keywords should be decided through a vote of Sangmyung University students. We respect various opinions, and we will make efforts to hold a satisfactory event. In addition to these events, we promise to diligently write and cover various articles for Sangmyung University students which is our duty. SM Herald wants to get closer to the readers of Sangmyung University. Feel free to contact the SM Herald if you have any good comments or articles you want. *Instagram: smherald9 *Email: smherald79@gmail.com Yoo-Jung Kim, Editor-in-Chief
제 10 호 Mid-Summer of 2021
Kicker: EDITORIAL (TURNING POINT) Mid-Summer of 2021 by Yoo-Jung Kim, Editor-In-Chief kyjmimi121@naver.com June, the time of publication of this article, is the month when all the final exams are held and the end of the semester exists. We think Sangmyung University students must have had a hard time preparing for the final exam. Of course, there will be students who are resting or preparing to get a job during summer vacation after the exam. In various situations, I would like to introduce wise words to my colleagues at Sangmyung University and tell them to cheer up. 1. "Lord, let me do my best what I can and give me the courage to give up what I can't do, and give me the wisdom to distinguish the two." - St. Francis' prayer. People can't be good at everything. Each person has his or her own characteristics, and there are things he or she can do well and cannot do well. I hope all of our Sangmyung University students will recognize this and do their best to do well without being frustrated. I sincerely hope that many students can find their dreams quickly and work hard for them. 2. God doesn't require us to succeed; he only requires that you try. - Mother Teresa The goals that Sangmyung University student study will all be different. The goals are different and the degree of success afterwards may vary. I hope our friends don't meet other people's standards of success. I think it's important to try and hope to walk your own way. It's a short saying, but it gives us strength and makes us think a lot. I sincerely hope that students of Sangmyung University will have a lot of time to think or study for themselves during summer vacation. Let's be a student of Sangmyung University who prepares for the future with strength. Yoo-Jung Kim, Editor-in-Chief
제 9 호 The New Semester of Spring at Sangmyung University
Kicker: EDITORIAL (NEW START) The New Semester of Spring at Sangmyung University Promotion and Improvement of SM HERALD by Yoo-Jung Kim, Editor-In-Chief kyjmimi121@naver.com A year after dealing with Corona wisely, the new semester is about to begin again. We would like to promise in this article that SM HERALD will also hold events and competitions with fresh ideas and promote them more actively. In the COVER STORY article of last year, I received good opinions and improvements from many students. Through this, I will introduce our process to plan schedule and improve the event, promotion, and schedule for the new semester. Schedule SM Herald publishes publications four times a year in March, June, September, and December. For the publication of 4 articles, the rest of the 8 month goes through the process of meeting ideas, setting the direction of articles and so on. We will share our issuance, events, and competition schedules in a calendar format so that SM Herald promotion and various students will be interested in our articles. Events Promotion day that was not implemented with Corona last semester will be held. To promote SM Herald and interest students in our articles, we will give them missions such as quizzes and conversations using expressions about our articles in SM Herald Webzines. We will also offer products to students who participated. In the COVER STORY article of last year, a survey showed that Sangmyung University students wanted Halloween or Christmas events. This year, we will hold a Halloween event with this feedback. We're thinking of an event where students shout trick or treat at the event booth and tell us the most impressive article and reason in SM Herald. We will provide delicious candies, chocolates and jellies to students who participated in this event. Promotion The event will also be held to promote the SM Herald continuously. It is an event that uses three expressions in Weekly, which our members are taking turns, to make and send conversation sentences. This is good for us because it can promote us, but it can also be useful study for students in Sangmyung University. Gifticon will be offered through a lottery for students who participated. The SM Herald will release a total of four publications this year. We will hold various events in which students can participate and actively promote articles. Please look forward to it and love it. 제 8 호 Wrapping Up
Kicker: EDITORIAL Wrapping Up By Sarah Chae, Editor-in-Chief sarah3fran1@naver.com It is already time to *wrap up! I know you may feel like you could not enjoy your school life enough this year. Great job coming all the way here even in these tough times. In this last editorial of 2020 (and the last editorial I will ever write for the SM Herald), I am going to talk about how to finish something successfully, in other words, wrapping up. Let us find out what we need to do to make a meaningful finale for 2020. After that, do not forget to take a look at what some students want to say about 2020 and 2021. *Wrap up (something) / Wrap (something) up: To complete something successfully or to finish doing something. - Accept the failures We wrote an article about the achievements and things to fix of this web magazine. The SM Herald has done this every winter, right at the end of the year. Just like us, give yourself some time to go through the last 365 days of your life and review what was successful and what was not. It is easy to blame yourself when you have failed to do something. Reflecting on it is okay, but be careful not to think about it over and over until you get depressed. This will only erase your strength to create positive change. When accepting the failures you made, stick to the facts and focus on your behavior (not your feelings). Thinking of yourself as a loser will not help you go forward at all. Look at the steps you took and think about whether it was helpful. - Build muscles Make a list of long-term and short-term goals or dreams. Visit the people you love. Give the hospital a visit and check out your mental and physical health. Throw out the toxic relationships and memberships that you never want to use again. These are well known ways to get ready for the next year. I think “building physical strength and mental muscles that can change your life” is a great way to get ready for the time ahead. It might look difficult to change a person’s life. However, we all need to know that it is not that hard. Select 4 places to donate money or anything else, and there you go, you have made a change to somebody’s life. Do not forget that you have the muscles and strength to change your life as well as others. That is all. The SM Herald hopes you have a happy new year! Before you go, take a quick look at the flashbacks of our fellow students. There is also a space for you, too. 제 7 호 This Fall, Do Not Fall
Kicker: EDITORIAL This Fall, Do Not Fall By Sarah Chae, Editor-in-Chief sarah3fran1@naver.com Chaotic times are slowly passing by. Post-corona seems to be around the corner. Summer has already come to an end. How have you been? Some may feel anxious and worry about how to make their second semester of 2020 meaningful. Staying at home might have been fun at first. The thrill of getting up late in the morning was unforgettable. Making dalgona coffee and not going to school sure was interesting. However, as social distancing periods were extended again and again, most of us have run out of ideas of what to do in order to stay strong. Therefore, today, I am going to talk about what we can do to get through this semester without falling down. If you are depressed, reach out for help! If you are having trouble in taking online classes and finishing assignments on time, you are not alone. Keeping up with school work and studies is not easy at all, especially when you are worn out and depressed. Going back and giving up is impossible, and going down might look like the easiest way to get through this semester. Some are saying that this is the chance to do something, but you might be to blue, sick, and tired. If you need help, reach out to the contacts I mentioned in the previous edition’s editorial. (Take a look at ‘How to stay strong in disasters’: https://www.smu.ac.kr/eng-newspaper/editorial.do?mode=view&articleNo=709781&article.offset=0&articleLimit=10#/list ). + If you need help with collecting information and doing research in school assignments, take a look at our previous edition’s cover story. There is information about websites you can browse. (https://www.smu.ac.kr/eng-newspaper/coverstory.do?mode=view&articleNo=707330#/list ) Achieve small missions! (with friends and family) The best way to not fall is by making achievements. The word ‘achievement’ might feel like a burden, but I am not talking about something like going on an adventure to find a fortune right now. Just give yourself a small mission that you can feel good about. Make a simple checklist that has at least three easy tasks and one challenging mission. It will feel nice when you finish the easy missions, and you will feel even better when you finish the challenging one! You can take on this quest on your own, or you can do it with a partner. Talking about these missions with friends and family is a good way to motivate each other. You can make a new hobby or habit in this process, and this will also help with getting through these tough times. This fall, please do not fall down. You will get through these tough times, and I am sure at the end of it you will think it was worth it. Sarah Chae, Editor-in-chief
제 6 호 The Middle of Somewhere
Kicker: EDITORIAL The Middle of Somewhere By Sarah Chae, Editor-in-Chief sarah3fran1@naver.com Disasters have always been by our side. This time though, it was closer than most of us could bear. Whatever we are thinking, though, the first semester is coming to an end. We are now in the middle of 2020. After the start of the COVID-19, we have experienced many new starts. I know that some people say that this will be a valuable experience. However, this whole self-isolation, buying masks, social distancing, and unfamiliar teaching methods are just making some of us feel like we are in the middle of nowhere. Wherever you are right now, first of all, I want to say: Good work coming all the way here. Tough times have made some of us get weak mentally and physically. The piles of homework and the fact that we have to be careful every moment in the day did not help us feel any better. How are we going to get through this, and when will this all end? How did you come all the way here? Maybe you cooked some stuff you never thought you would ever cook. My sister is making cute looking cookies from YouTube and I have started listening to music every day from an idol group called ‘OH MY GIRL.’ Taking pictures of cats in the parking lot helped a lot, too. I saved entertainment expenses because I could not go outside, and I used some of it to support medical staff and donate money to people in need. It sure is not easy to maintain daily life, but we are all trying our own ways. The Ministry of Health and Welfare said that in order to stay strong, you need to accept the changes in your daily life and keep yourselves healthy. Yoga, meditation, and fun indoor activities are great for this. Make frequent video calls and online contacts with close friends and family to share your feelings. If you need more help, ask experts for some advice. Here are some ways to ask for help. Everyone can get lost in times like this, but thankfully, everyone can get help too. If you need help, do not forget the contacts above! I hope you can find your way to a healthy, happy, and hopeful somewhere. See you in the middle of somewhere. The SM Herald will always be there for you. Sarah Chae, Editor-in-chief Sources: National Center for Disaster Trauma http://pf.kakao.com/_lKgbxb , https://nct.go.kr
제 5 호 Spring Into A New Year, New Semester
Kicker: EDITORIAL Spring Into A New Year, New Semester By Sarah Chae, Editor-in-Chief sarah3fran1@naver.com Spring gives us a feeling of blooming flowers, love, and a start of something. For example, this is the start for me as the new Editor-in-Chief of the SM Herald. Some of us are taking the first step into Sangmyung University. The rest of us are probably sad or worried because the semester is starting again. The SM Herald is taking some new steps too. In the previous edition’s cover story, we did a check-up on improvements and what needs to be fixed. From now on, the SM Herald has accepted those opinions and is trying our best to write articles that are interesting as well as helpful. We are planning to open an event & information booth if circumstances allow us. Most importantly, in April to May we are going to look for students to work with us, so if you are interested, don’t forget to look out for our recruitment info poster on campus and on our SNS accounts (Everytime, Instagram). The opening of the first semester of 2020 has been postponed. No thanks to the COVID-19, 20% of 2020 has already gone by. What did you do during the extra time? Maybe you made the famous arm-aching ‘Dalgona Coffee’. Did you stay at home and accept the challenge to buy masks that get sold out in seconds on the internet? You might have spent a great time at the movies. Whatever is happening, while on the other side, you might have worried that you might spread the virus yourself. Some of us might feel depressed or anxious by these series of unbelievable events. I cannot say that I am not anxious too. Everything was postponed, delayed, put back… I am worried because I know that time will not wait for us to catch up with everything again. Early blooming flowers might make us feel like we are falling back. However, I believe this unexpected experience has given us a time to spring into 2020 in a new way. I believe that you and me, since we are humans and not flowers, will find a way to spring forward and spend a great year again. Sarah Chae, Editor-in-Chief
제 4 호 One Step for a Better Start
Kicker: EDITORIAL One Step for a Better Start by Eun-ji Lee, Editor-in-chief dmswl716@naver.com We prepared a COVER STORY about performance evaluation of The SM Herald webzine. Our Editors who will lead The SM Herald checked the improvements compared with the past when we published The SM Herald as a paper magazine. They also analyzed what needs to be modified to publish a webzine that is more helpful to students. Some articles in SOCIETY, ENTERTAINMENT, and WORLD were written by members who will leave The SM Herald next year. Leaving memories of The SM Herald behind, the feeling of writing the final articles must have been really heavy. I am also sad because the memories from being a Cub-reporter to becoming Editor-in-chief are so precious. However, I believe all the remaining members will lead The SM Herald in a better way, so I was able to write the last EDITORIAL with a comfortable mind. Lastly, I want to express my appreciation to the members who have been trying to make The SM Herald more useful. Eun-ji Lee, Editor-in-chief
